The transition of a series as unique as Resident Evil from home consoles to portable gaming was always going to be a difficult one. There is a certain ambience and tension to the home console games that can sometimes be lost during the fumbling touching and scraping at a touch screen.
The ipad game’s story plays out very similarly to its original Gamecube source material. Unfortunately, that’s where the comparisons end. Even the story isn’t that similarly. You still play as Secret Service agent Leon Kennedy but it seems that a lot of the content has been cut out, and you’re left with 12 rather mediocre missions and a very lacking rendition of what was previously a great story. The choice of weapons is also sadly lacklustre with very little room for customisation, and it seems that all the RPG elements of the original version have been cut out. This was a bad move because the RPG elements were what made Resident Evil 4 so different and special and a standout for the series.
The control system is shocking, there is one stick for both movement and camera panning which makes for some insufferable experiences that are so frustrating you may very well give up before you’ve made it to the end. Along with this, there are several typos in the dialogue that is completely unacceptable for any game, even if it is just a portable download.
The graphics are quite frankly as appalling as they were back with the original Resident Evil and are certainly not a site for sore eyes. The character design is blocky, the scenery is bland and uninteresting and the textures are very blurry. Overall, it’s a shoddy effort from the design team.
The soundtrack, which could have been a redeeming factor, is another awful show from the developers. The music is poor for creating any atmosphere, and the lack of any real voice acting leaves the game completely un-immersive.
It’s tough to pick out any real positives from this game as it is a complete letdown. The only thing that may make it worth picking up is if you’re a fan of the series. With a hefty price tag of around $12.99 even the most hardened of fans may struggle with the prospect of buying this game.
